Casting Instructions for ‘Making Your Own Balms’

Basics

The basics of building a Balm are to extract the beneficial properties of herbs in oil, then add beeswax to harden the oil. You may add other ingredients such as essential oils, or even flavorings of earning lip balms in the case. In some recipes that the process of infusing oils is skipped entirely and essential oils are used on their own with carrier oils.

Below that does use herbs for each recipe you will infuse your oil. About infusing oils to learn more please see How to Infuse Oils. I like to leave my herbs to infuse on their own for at least one full moon cycle. Others may want to use heat for a infusion.

Based on the freshness and the type of herbs you’re using add herbs and you may wish to strain the oil. This is entirely your decision. using herbs in generous quantities that I don’t need to do this, I find that. I also use essential oils in my balms very often, however, so you may wish to do the strain if you decide to leave the vital oils from the balm you are 39,, and add method.

Once your oil is prepared you’ll melt any wax and your oils you’re using in a pan over low heat. As explained in the tips below next add test and your infused oil for hardness. Cool slightly if you are using them and add essential oils. Pour into containers and label and you are all set.

Tips for Making Balms

You will want to wash them if you intend to make your Balm using freshly plants. Do this by shaking them to remove dirt then spread out the herbs allowing them to air dry for several hours (until wilted) to decrease the moisture content. Could cause your Balm to even or spoil mold. For this reason I, myself, prefer to use dried herbs in my oil to prevent contamination and excessive moisture which may cause such spoilage.

You may wish to test to find out whether your Balm is the ideal consistancy once you add your wax. To perform a simple test I dip a spoon and set it. You might attempt is dipping the spoon. If your Balm is too soft, add more beeswax and if it is too hard add a carrier oil.

You will want to pour your Balm and label them accordingly. You may sterilize by washing in hot water in the dishwasher with a detergent containing bleach or by using bleach from the water if washing by hand. Air dry to avoid re-contaminating your containers and causing premature spoilage.

Do not add any essential oils as soon as your base oil is very very hot-it may destroy them in the procedure.

Be sure pans are non-metal like glass or porcelin If you have to use metal pans or utensils be sure they are not made of aluminum and they’re not coated using a non surface.

To add vitamin E, poke a hole in the capsule with a pin and squeeze the contents out. Discard the capsule.

Be careful when using some essential oils as well as carrier oils. Allergic reactions can be caused by them. For instance those who are allergic to nuts should be careful and avoid using any oil derived from nuts including walnut and peanut oils or almond oil. Be sure when selling or giving gifts of balms to tag them to prevent someone having a life threatening reaction.

Your oils and waxes really should heat over hot water in a double boiler.

For pouring hot liquids into, be sure your containers are made. Many are not and there is nothing worse than spending a month receiving your balm and making a oil and getting it cracks and spill all over the top!

Proportions for beeswax are approximate. If you need a balm that is harder or softer add or subtract from your recipe accordingly.

By adding borax and water, you can soften balm a bit. The borax acts as an emulsifier and will permit the water and oil to mix rather than separate. I use 1 teaspoon of borax. Do not add the whole cup of water to your recipe! Add a few drops or a quarter teaspoon at a time at the most and then examine your consistency. Keep doing this until it reaches the degree that is desired. It will cause your balm to harden quickly so do so last.
